The Hawaii State Legislature Has Approved Funding For the Kauai High School Technology Center
Early Saturday morning, April 28, 2012, the Hawaii State Legislature Conference Committee passed the state budget bill which included funds for the Kauai High School Technology Center. Upon approval by Governor Abercrombie, this bill appropriates funds which will become available on July 1, 2012.
The bill was sponsored by all four Kauai legislators, with Representative James Kunane Tokioka and Senator Ronald D. Kouchi leading the effort. Mahalo to all the Kauai legislators who guided this bill through the legislature in this very difficult year of austere funding levels which made its passage especially noteworthy.
Kauai High School Technology Center
The Kauai High School Technology Center project involved the gutting, and remodeling the existing "Building-T" which was a building used by the old Kauai Community College. The KHS Technology Center was dedicated on April 19, 2018, and will provide new centralized space for classrooms, laboratories, and production facilities focused on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The cost to accomplish the gutting and remodeling was $800,000. The project planning and design was provided pro-bono byarchitect/structural engineer, Lloyd Sako, AIA/PE (KHS '65) and his company, Project Design, Inc. The funding sources came from the state legislature, the state Department of Education and the Kauai High School Foundation. Private monies donated was used to supplement state funds for the interior renovation work.
