Ambassadors Dinner Meeting

DISCUSSION:
1. The KHS Class representatives or ‘Ambassadors’ play an important role in the success of our Kauai High School Foundation by communicating Foundation information to their respective classmates, and by increasing our alumni support, financial and/or volunteer work.
2. There are two major parts of this organization: 1). the building of our revenue from donations, and 2). the financial supporting of Kauai High School programs.
3. Total revenue from our first fundraising year, 2010, is almost at $100,000. We are now ready to provide some financial support to the school.
4. Funding to the school will be for 1. general projects, 2. special projects and 3.scholarships: 1. General Projects are individual ‘grant’ requests to the Foundation from students, teachers and administration. Generally, these projects do not have a dollar limit and would include requests that would ultimately benefit the students. Once the application grant form is completed, it will be distributed to the school. A Priority Project Committee will be formed to prioritize the list of projects. This Committee will likely be composed of volunteers from the school including a teacher, student, administration personnel, and members from the community. 2. Special Projects are those projects requiring a separate fundraising effort, as an example, the KHS Technology Center. 3. The Foundation will be awarding five-$1,000 scholarships to this year’s graduating seniors. Also for this graduating class, the Foundation, through donations from the KHS Class of 1950, will be awarding two $2,500 scholarships, one male and one female.
5. Presentation of the KHS Technology Center was made by the school’s NHS students. The KHS Technology Center will be housed in the existing Building T, presently being used as lockers and sports equipment storage. The interior of the existing 5,000 sq. ft. building will be completely renovated with minor improvements to the exterior. It will include rooms for lecture/seminar, lab/productivity, and media control. It will serve to better prepare students to meet their future goals.
6. New initiatives called the Founders’ Society and the Community Centurion were introduced at this meeting. Brochures were distributed to all attendees for information and advertisement. These initiatives will commemorate the 100th anniversary of Kauai High School on September 14, 2014. Detailed narrative and applications can be found in the brochures. Donation requests will end on the anniversary date. It can be made in lump sum or installments. The Founders’ is for individual or couple at a minimum donation of $5,000. The Centurion is for businesses, clubs and other organizations or groups at a minimum donation of $10,000. Hopefully, both programs will promote enhanced giving and recognize and honor, in perpetuity, alumni, friends, businesses, groups, etc. Question: For the Founders’, if I cannot afford $5,000 by myself, would it be permissible for a group of us to participate? Answer: No. The Founders’ Society is for individual or couple. However, the Community Centurion program is for groups such as yours.
POST MEETING: It appears that there is a misconception as to means of donating to the Foundation. At this meeting, we inadvertently covered only the Founders’ and Community Centurion as means of donating to benefit our school. We had wrongly assumed that everybody already knew about the on-going annual solicitation program. This annual donation request to alumni and friends does not state any amount. It is left up to the individual as to the amount he or she is comfortable with. All of the alumni donors are acknowledged and their names published in our webpage with their respective classes. The Foundation also thank all donors with a formal acknowledgement letter for their contributions and for tax reporting purposes. The Founders’ and Centurion initiatives are a one-time effort in celebration of the school’s 100th anniversary. The minimum amounts were set for what we thought would be reasonable levels for distinction. After that date, it will be over. However, the on-going solicitation requests will continue. These solicitations and fundraiser activities are by far the back-bone of our financial stability, and not the 100th Anniversary initiatives. Above all, we are only after one thing, to help the students at our Alma Mater to better prepare for their future endeavors.
7. Starting from this year, the Foundation intends to develop and perpetuate partnerships with businesses. The business partner donor program is to work in unison with the established Community Centurion fund raising plans. This program will develop a relationship with the Kauai Chamber of Commerce and the KHS Business Council.
8. The 2nd Annual Golf Fundraiser Tournament will be held on Saturday, August 27, 2011 at Wailua Golf Course, 7 am shotgun start, lunch and awards to follow at the Kauai War Memorial Convention Center. The format will be the same as last year, 3-person team best ball.
